Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja’s partnership put India in the driving seat. Their 204-run partnership gave India the upper hand on the first day. After a fiery spell by Mark Wood in the first session, which caused a bit of turbulence for the hosts, where Mark Wood cleaned up the opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and then Shubman Gill was caught behind by Ben Foakes. After gill’s dismissal ,Rajat Patidar got out by Tom Heartly . India was struggling at 33 runs for 3 wickets when Rohit Sharma and local hero Ravindra Jadeja took charge and gave India a solid base. In contrast to his usual style of making runs, Rohit Sharma played fewer aerial shots, which paid off as he comfortably grabbed his century. It was Rohit’s 11th test century, shutting down all the critics who doubted his ability to score in test cricket. After his century, Rohit started playing lots of aerial shots, which were needed at that moment and helped India cross the 200-run mark.
Due to this partnership, the second session went wicketless, giving India the driving seat. On the other hand, local boy Ravindra Jadeja played his role as the second lead, running between the wickets and toiling the bowlers. Jadeja reached his fifty in no time. Rohit got dismissed at the score of 131, a soft dismissal bowled by Mark Wood and caught by Ben Stokes at mid-wicket. However, he played his required role, and then Ravindra Jadeja, who was in the mood to show why he is the current world no. 1 in test cricket, came up with the captain’s knock.
Amidst all this, one debutant took the limelight with his magical innings, Sarfaraz Khan. There has been a lot of talk about his ability and unorthodox playing style, and he showed today why he deserves to be on this international arena . He scored 62 runs in just 66 balls with 9 fours and 1 six, reaching his fifty in just 48 balls. Viewers who watched him today saw more than just numbers; he gave a glimpse of why he deserves to be at this stage with his intent, composure, and ability to tackle the bowlers. Test cap no. 311 runs looks lucky for Sarfaraz.
There is one more debutant waiting for his chance to bat as KS Bharat was dropped, and instead, Dhruv Jurel is making his debut for Team India. India has the upper hand in this innings and they are looking to add a few more runs to pile up the pressure on the English side. It will be interesting to see how the second day goes for both sides.
